How To Enjoy Your Summer With A Baby

As summertime approaches, you may start feeling a little overwhelmed with how to handle this season for the first time with a baby. A new baby comes with so many firsts including how to approach a new change in climate.

Summers can be a drastic change to your environment, especially if you live somewhere with high temperatures and humidity (like we do in Georgia). It’s tempting to just barricade yourselves indoors.

Almost like a reversed hibernation. Maybe you’ll reemerge in the fall when you feel it’s safe to once again brave the outdoors with your little one in a more tolerable climate.

Instead of spending your summer indoors because you feel unprepared or uncertain of how to handle the warm (or in our case hot) weather, let’s get you prepped to enjoy your summer together out of the isolation of your home.

Don’t let this season pass you by. Embrace it and make fun memories with your little one.

Now, to be honest, the Georgia summers are my least favorite season. It’s hot, it’s humid, and it can, at times, be pretty uncomfortable.Β

Imagine a wet cloth being logged into your face as you step outdoors. Not exactly the warm welcome you were hoping for from Mother Nature’s introduction of the new season.

That’s why in the summer you typically find people in Georgia in or near water, in a place with good air movement, or sequestered in the air conditioning. Central air is standard down here, a concept I was unfamiliar with growing up in Minnesota.

Minnesota is not so far off from the summers in the south. They have their fair share of heat and humidity, but the humidity in Georgia takes it to another level.

I quickly understood this when the first summer hit. Keeping cool is the goal for survival and prepping with the right gear is the key to being able to enjoy the long summer months.

This applies to surviving the summer weather with a baby pretty much wherever you are that has a rather warm climate in the summer months. Below are things that will help you to enjoy this season safely and comfortably with your little one.

Protective Swimwear

If you’re going to the pool, lake, beach, or basically any water, you’ll want to make sure that you have the proper swimwear. The little bikini and trunk bathing suits for babies are super cute, but you want the ones that cover more of their skin to keep them protected.

These long-sleeved swimsuits are perfect for protecting your baby’s skin and the handy zipper allows you to more easily put them on and take them off your child, especially when wet. They also have super cute designs and come with a hat to protect your baby’s head.

Swim Diapers

These Little Swimmers are water-friendly diapers that keep your baby protected like a diaper and will hold up to being submerged in water.

Be careful though when it comes to poopy diapers. It will catch the contents like a diaper, but if you’re at a pool, it can mess up the water and potentially cause the need for it to be drained, so be checking their bottoms often.

Hats

Any hat that covers your baby’s head is good, but you’ll want to kick that up a notch and get a hat that has a brim all the way around to protect their face, ears, and neck from the sun.

These bucket hats are great, adjustable to the size of your baby’s head, and have a strap that helps to keep it in place with an easily slidable notch to keep the strap securely snug on their head.

Sunscreen – 6mos +

If your baby is at least six months old, you should be able to start using sunscreen. There are several brands out there, but my go-to’s are typically Baby Bum and Aveeno.

I also love that they now offer roller styles and ones that look like sticks of deodorant for easy application. These add some convenience and efficiency to the process, but be sure to still rub it into their skin and try to apply it 30 minutes prior to sun/water exposure.

Portable playpen

This portable playpen is excellent to have when you’re traveling, hanging out in the backyard, at the beach, or at home in your living room. It’s versatile and so easy to put together and break down.

It provides a canopy top that helps to keep your child protected from the sun and a nice, safe area for them to play and crawl around. I’ve used this playpen so often because it is so easy to quickly put together and transport.

Sunglasses

These sunglasses help protect your baby’s eyes, are super cute, and the best part is they are unbreakable. Yep, you read that right!

If they are having a hard time keeping them on their face, they also come with a detachable strap that helps to keep them in place. And it’s really not fair how adorable and stylish they look.

Lightweight Outfits

Dress your baby in lightweight attire to keep them comfortable. Be sure to have backups on hand while you’re out and about.

Kiddie Pool & Splash Pads

These pools are a great way for your little one (if they are on the older side, 1+ years old) to have fun and stay cool. Not to mention, they can be helpful for providing mommy with some sweet relief from the heat, even if you’re just putting your feet in.

These splash pads are a fun activity for older babies that also help to keep them cool in the summer months. For babies that are sitting up, but still on the younger side, you can try this inflatable tub. It was perfect for traveling and would work well as a miniature pool.

Inflatable with Cover

If you’re heading to the pool and want to have your baby enjoy some pool time without having to hold them the entire time, these floats are a great way for them to still be within arms-length, enjoy the water, and stay protected from the sun.Β

Mini Air Pump

This mini air pump is so convenient to have. It’s a small travel size that comes with a bag to carry the pump, attachments, and a cord to charge it. It’s great for blowing up and deflating floaties, small inflatable pools, and even these handy-dandy travel baths.Β

No more blowing these things up with your mouth. Save your breath, time, and energy, and snag one of these.

Protection Against MosquitoesΒ

This baby oil by Johnson and Johnson is supposed to help keep mosquitoes away from your little one. It has aloe vera, and vitamin E, and smells delightful.

You can also get a mosquito net for the stroller to keep your baby protected from those annoying pests while you’re on the go in the evenings.

Feeling ready to take on the summer with your tiny P.I.C.? I hope so! Good luck and have fun beating the heat and making memories this summer!

Cheers, Warriors!
